CWC Board pays tribute to LaFever

MARGARETVILLE, NY January 30, 2004 - The newest member of the Catskill Watershed Corporation (CWC) Board of Directors on January 27 introduced a resolution paying tribute to long-time member Charles LaFever who passed away January 24.

Charles Buck, attending his first meeting since his election as the Schoharie County representative on the Board, offered the resolution recognizing the accomplishments of the founding Board member from Bovina.

The unanimously adopted resolution noted that Mr. LaFever was instrumental in helping to set up the CWC's Stormwater and Sand and Salt Programs, and chaired the Stormwater/Wastewater Committee since the CWC was established in 1997. With his years of experience in construction and small business, and his understanding of life in the Catskills, Mr. LaFever brought valuable insight to the CWC board, the resolution noted, concluding, "He will be missed for his advise, his expertise and his friendly manner."

The resolution will be sent with sympathy to Mr. LaFever's wife Leona, and children, Susan, Diane and Raymond.

The Board warmly welcomed Charles Buck, who has been Supervisor of the Town of Jefferson for 10 years. A graduate of Cornell University's Agriculture Program, Mr. Buck once operated three farming operations with his late wife Lynn before selling two of them to family members. He is Chairman of the Schoharie County Soil & Water Conservation District, and is a Director and past-Chairman of MOSA, the regional solid waste agency. He also chairs the Highway Committee on the Schoharie County Board of Supervisors.

Mr. Buck, was named to the CWC's Policy, Land and Finance Committees. He replaces James Brown of Gilboa, who retired last fall. In other business at its January 27 meeting, the Board approved low-interest loans for four area businesses.

  • Sportsfield Specialties Inc. of Delhi will use CWC funds to enable the in-house production of sports field products (modular dug-outs, goal posts, foul poles, etc.) used at athletic facilities. The company will build the production facility at Clark Companies' Delhi campus, and is expected to employ 35 people by 2006.
  • David Shaw of Delhi will use a loan to help purchase Perkins Taxidermy where he has worked for 17 years
  • Village Seafood Wholesale of Bloomville was awarded a loan to help purchase new equipment and rearrange its financing
  • Leland and Marian Ploutz, Jr. will use their loan to build a 10-unit motel on their Octagon Farm Bed & Breakfast property in Walton.
