Renewable Energy Topic at Local Government Day MARGARETVILLE, NY, September 25, 2006 - Guest speakers at the upcoming Catskills Local Government Day will discuss how some communities in the region are utilizing and promoting renewable energy to fuel municipal operations. This timely topic will be the focus of the afternoon session at the Sixth Annual Local Government Day, to be held Thursday, Oct. 19 at Hanah Country Inn, Margaretville. The CWC and the New York State Department of State will once again sponsor the event for municipal officials, zoning and planning board members, economic development specialists and interested individuals. A buffet lunch will be provided. Heather Brown of Sullivan County Division of Planning will discuss how that county has incorporated renewable energy in its recently completed strategic plan, and is actively pursuing alternative energy as a viable economic stimulus. Sue McIntyre, Delaware County Solid Waste Coordinator, and Mark Schneider, of Delaware County Electric Cooperative, will outline a plan to capture and utilize methane gas from the county landfill. And Randolph Horner of the Woodstock Environmental Commission will explain how Woodstock is making use of solar energy to power town operations. Prof. Jerry Cherney of Cornell University will discuss his research into the energy potential of grass pellets, a presentation sure to attract agricultural interests and landowners. Patrice Courtney of Energy Smart Communities will provide information on energy assistance and incentives offered to municipalities and homeowners by NYSERDA. DOS trainers will be on hand with workshops on Regulating Manufactured Homes, Land Use Tools for Creating Affordable Housing, Powers & Duties of Elected Officials and Conducting Meetings and Hearings. |
