New art show at CWC office

MARGARETVILLE, April 7, 2008 - Twenty-five works by Halcottsville artist Alix Hallman Travis are on display at the offices of the Catskill Watershed Corporation in Margaretville through July 10.

"Shapes of Water" can be seen at 905 Main Street next to the American Legion hall. The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Visitors are always welcome. All of the paintings are for sale.

Ms. Travis paints from her Bragg Hollow Studio, a former blacksmith’s shop where forge, anvil and iron tools share space with easels, paints and finished watercolors and oils. She is a member of a group of Catskill area artists who exult in on-site and outdoor creation, known as "plein air" painting. Her work has a fresh, immediate feel, and captures the fleeting essences of light, weather and mood.

The work on display at CWC reflects the many forms of water and the human occupation that depends on it. Area bridges, railroad tracks, buildings and yes, artists, are depicted in streamside settings that define the rural Catskills.

The artist has exhibited throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania and the Catskills. She has studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art, the Art Students League of New York, and the Paris American Academy. This year one of her paintings was acquired by the National Art Museum of Sport in Indianapolis. She will be the featured artist at the Longyear Galley in Margaretville this summer.
