CWC to help develop recreational access parking areas

MARGARETVILLE, NY, Oct. 17, 2008 – The Catskill Watershed Corporation will team with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection to develop small gravel parking areas to provide public access to City-owned land.

The lots will provide safe, off-road parking so that hunters, anglers, hikers and others may more easily reach lands that have been opened for most recreational uses. The parking areas may be constructed with the assistance of local town road crews. They are expected to be built in early 2009.

The gravel lots, to accommodate a few vehicles at a time, will provide access to the following named City Recreation Areas:

  • Peakes Brook (203 acres), Peakes Brook Rd., Town of Delhi;

  • Covert Hollow (329 acres), Covert Hollow Rd., Town of Hamden;

  • Roundtop Mountain (339 acres), Gillespie Rd., Town of Hunter;

  • Plattekill (129 acres), Lower Meeker Hollow Rd., Town of Roxbury;

  • Patterson Ridge (269 acres), Route 23, Town of Ashland; and

  • Westkill (273 acres), Route 42, Town of Lexington.

    These large City parcels are adjacent to State lands so users do not need a New York City Access Permit.
