Catskill Mountain Region
The Catskill Center - The Catskills: A Sense of Place
This series of lesson and activities is packaged into modular components from which a teacher can choose topics to include in his or her classroom teaching. The teaching modules are designed to work together as an overall program, but may also be used individually, depending on teacher preferences and time. Content meets state learning standards and is supplemented with optional instruction by Catskill Center staff and experts from throughout the region.
The Catskill Forest Association
The CFA was established in 1982 for the purpose of promoting forest stewardship in the Catskill region by forest landowners, timber harvesters, foresters, and the general public. The association advocates quality forest management to improve forest health, prevent threats to the forest ecosystem, and support conservation efforts.
The Catskill Institute for the Environment
The CIE recognizes the intense interest focused on environmental issues in the Catskill Mountains. The Catskill Region has a high visibility as a watershed for the largest unfiltered water supply in the world, but the environment is equally significant to the economic well being and quality of life of the people who live in the Catskills. By developing and maintaining Catskill environmental databases and archives and providing access to them, they can make scientific information available to residents and decision makers.

Frost Valley YMCA - Environmental Education
Frost Valley YMCA is a non-profit organization providing programs for a diverse population of children, youth and adults. Their mission is to promote a healthy spirit, mind and body for all, and to develop a citizenry with strong character through programs that emphasize honesty, respect, caring and responsibility. K-12 programs run through-out the school year and include 3, 4 or 5 day courses for groups of from 10 to 400 people.
Hudson Basin River Watch
HBRW includes schools from the Adirondacks to the lower estuary of the Hudson River, and some within the Delaware River watershed. Teachers and students monitor the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the Hudson and tributaries. Students enter stream data into the online database, analyze and present their findings at an annual student congress. The dynamic network of HBRW schools and community partners ensures that science education and water-quality studies translate into river protection with positive results.
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation
Outdoor Ecology Lessons offered by NYSDEC Environmental Educator Richard Parisio are for middle-elementary age through high school students and includes the following interdisciplinary lessons: Modeling a Watershed (schoolground/classroom activity); Mapping Our Watershed (schoolground/classroom activity); Stream Watch (field trip); "River of Words"; Writing Watershed Poetry (schoolground/classroom activity); Tree Study (schoolground/classroom activity).
Illustrated talks, for upper elementary, middle school, high school, and adult audiences: "History of the Catskill Region and Forest Preserve"; "Naturalist John Burroughs: His Life and Work".

Watershed Agricultural Council - Outreach and Education Page
WAC is a partnership between Watershed farmers, NYC, and state and regional agencies that promote voluntary whole farm planning based on scientific research and local leadership. Forestry and riparian protection are other WAC programs.

Astoria Residents Reclaiming Our World
ARROW is a community based and volunteer-run organization, dedicated to improving the environment of its Western Queens neighborhood. The primary goal of ARROW is to ensure that valuable natural resources are preserved and that public land is used safely and remains accessible to all. ARROW aims to; provide environmental education and action, promote community involvement, build coalitions among local community based organizations, and to encourage individual stewardship of the neighborhood and the local environment.
Audubon Society - NYC Chapter
New York City Audubon Society recently published Look Around New York to engage 4th - 6th graders in learning about nature in NYC. They can provide issues in bulk to environmental educators who don't have the budget to reproduce Look Around. Bronx Council for Environmental Quality - Education Committee
The BCEQ seeks to establish as an reward inherent human right a sound, for looking policy regarding an aesthetic, unpolluted environment with a natural and historic heritage. The education committee plans events, holds seminars on outdoor environmental education, and most importantly they network with other organizations and educational facilities to help educators learn more on how they can inform their students on the importance of maintaining and improving the Bronx environment.
Bronx River Alliance
The Bronx River Alliance is a partnership to protect, improve and restore the Bronx River corridor and greenway. The Alliance offers programs for teachers and students to bring the Bronx River into the classroom and promote the Bronx River as an outdoor classroom. Brooklyn Botanic Garden
The Botanic Garden offers an array of programs, especially for youth and adult education, and families. They have a children's garden, summer science adventures, school programs, Brooklyn cultural adventures program, student internships, and projects to do at home.
Cornell Cooperative Extension - of New York City
The NYC Office of the Cornell Cooperative Extension System was established in 1948 with federal dollars to provide food-marketing information to urban consumers and others concerned with the food system in the NYC area. Their mission is to create learning partnerships that strengthen individual, family, and community well-being.
The Council on the Environment of New York City
CENYC, founded in 1970, is a privately funded citizen's organization in the Mayor's Office. Programs include Open Space Greening, Greenmarket, Environmental Education, and Waste Prevention and Recycling. CENYC offers information on noise pollution and abatement, alternatives to hazardous household products, and other issues.
The Croton Great Swamp
The Great Swamp, covering over 4,000 acres, is one of the largest freshwater wetlands in New York State. Situated in New York's eastern Putnam and Dutchess Counties, the Great Swamp and its 63,000-acre watershed stretch 20 miles through the towns of Southeast, Patterson, Pawling and Dover. Located less than 70 miles from NYC, this vast and fragile wetland provides numerous benefits to residents of the Harlem Valley, including drinking water, flood control, recreation, open space, and wildlife habitat.
Croton Planning & Watershed Education - Westchester Planning Department
This education program educates students about watersheds and water quality issues. The program provides opportunities for data sharing, and networking between existing water quality programs. Resources are provided to Westchester schools, organizations, citizen groups and other interested parties to establish or enhance water quality programs. Founded in 1974, EEAC is a non-profit, tax deductible organization made up of dedicated educators, youth leaders, environmental professionals and students. EEAC members work together to stimulate and encourage environmental education in New York City and the surrounding region.
Federated Conservationists of Westchester County, Inc.
FCWC is a coalition of organizations and individuals numbering over 5,000 area residents concerned about protecting and preserving natural and historic resources of the New York metropolitan region.
Friends of Blue Heron Park
Located on Staten Island, the center offers environmental education by community based part-time educators who bring students to the ponds and woodlands at Blue Heron, relating the natural world to specialized classroom lessons.
Friends of Rockaway, Inc

NY-NJ Harbor Estuary Program
HEP is a National Estuary Program authorized in 1987 by the U.S. EPA. The program is a multi-year effort to develop and implement a plan to protect, conserve, and restore the New York-New Jersey Harbor, which includes the waters of New York Harbor and the tidally influenced portions of all rivers and streams that empty into it.
Hudson River Sloop Clearwater
Clearwater conducts environmental education, advocacy programs and celebrations to protect the Hudson River, its tributaries and related bodies of water, and to create awareness of the estuary's complex relationship with the coastal zone. The centerpiece of the public education program is the 106' sailing sloop Clearwater, which serves as a movable classroom, laboratory and stage. Over a dozen programs nationwide have been modeled after Clearwater's.

New York Public Interest Research Group
NYPIRG is New York State's largest research and advocacy non-profit organization primarily focused on environmental preservation, consumer protection, government reform and public health issues. Saw Mill River Audubon Society
Saw Mill River Audubon Society is one of five chapters of the National Audubon Society in Westchester. They offer a variety of free public programs and field trips, eight local wildlife sanctuaries, and environmental classroom programs for students from pre-school through college.
Scenic Hudson
Their mission is to enhance and protect the lands along the 315-mile-long Hudson River between Albany and Manhattan. Programs include land preservation, environmental quality, and public information and education. They maintain 23 parks and preserves along the river.

New York City's premier source of information on math, science, and technology resources and enrichment programs. A large database, but you have to know what you are looking for.
Serpentine Art & Nature Commons
The Serpentine Art & Nature Commons is a not-for-profit community based organization devoted to the preservation of 35 acres of wooded land on Grymes Hill, Staten Island. This hillside, which includes hiking trails and a scenic view of NYC Harbor, is open and free of charge for use by the public.
Sierra Club - of New York City

Teacher's Guide to Water Education Resources (in NY-NJ Harbor Estuary region)
This guide has a lot of field trip ideas, teacher training opportunities, and classroom materials offered by over 50 groups in the region. HEP also has grants for estuary projects. This guide is available on the web site, or by contacting Laura Bartovics, HEP Outreach Coordinator, at 212.637.3816.
Teatown Lake Reservation
The 730-acre Teatown Lake Reservation is located in northern Westchester County. It features a 33-acre lake, streams, scenic gorge, hardwood swamps, mixed forests, meadows, hemlock and laurel groves.
Theodore Gordon Flyfishers
TGF is a conservation and fly fishing group whose dual mission is to preserve and enhance the sport as well as to promote and nourish the rewards of fellowship derived from a unique company of friends. This is a site where you can stay informed with current issues of local concern that relate to fishing and water quality across the entire state.
Trout Unlimited - New York City Chapter
TU's mission has been to conserve, protect and restore coldwater fisheries and their watersheds. For four decades, TU has been America's leading trout and salmon conservation organization. Be sure to check out the Embrace-A-Stream project.
Trout in the Classroom
We connect children at both ends of the water tunnel by having them raise trout as a way of understanding the need for cold clean water.
Waterkeeper Alliance
The Alliance is the umbrella organization for 40 Keeper programs. The Water Keeper movement, which is among the fastest growing grass-roots environmental movements, is a "neighborhood watch" program, a citizen's patrol to protect communities and the waters they depend on.
Wave Hill
A non-profit cultural institution located on 28 acres in the northwest Bronx, Wave Hill is dedicated to exploring the interaction between human beings and the natural environment. Programs in environmental education for City children, and teachers are designed to foster public understanding of and appreciation for this complementary relationship.

The US Environmental Protection Agency - Adopt Your Watershed
This new web site serves both students and teachers looking for information on water-related environmental education programs. Highlighting some of EPA's best materials, this site offers links to other great resources and provides access to some of the best water curricula developed throughout the country.
This site offers information on many aspects of water, along with pictures, data, maps, and an interactive center where you can give opinions and test your water knowledge.
Surf Your Watershed contains databases that allow you to search for watershed groups and view ongoing wetlands projects throughout your area either by zip code or group name. You can also add to online dialog about environmental issues, find support for your river initiative, and a directory of web sites dedicated to environmental issues and information.
Academy 2000 is a set of self-paced, distance-learning training modules that provide a broad introduction to watershed management. It utilizes slide show/lectures, interactive exercises, downloadable documents, links to related sites, and self-tests. The modules cover topics about which watershed managers, local officials, involved citizens, decision makers, and others should have at least an introductory level of knowledge. Suitable for advanced high school students or first-year college students and up.
A great hands-on way to have fun while exploring ecology and the environment! The "Make Your Own Watershed Kit" has been created for learning and is modeled after the award-winning EnviroScape® models used internationally by schools and communities. The kit contains plaster molds, plaster, 3 paint brushes, non-toxic paint, and 3 green felt strips. You can add other pieces more specific to your needs on your own.
The EPA has produced a 24-page booklet geared toward concerned citizens aged 10-15 that presents key findings of the Nation Water Quality Inventory in an easy-to-read format. YouthCaN is a youth run organization that uses technology to inspire, connect and educate people worldwide about environmental issues. Through a network of conferences, activities and events we unite environmentally active youth to exchange ideas about the environment and empower others to make a difference in their own communities. Every April, YouthCaN welcomes educators from around the world to the American Museum of Natural History to present their findings and participate in educational workshops and activities.
